Loving Care and Kindness at Karingal Gardens

My name is Heather Lock. I am a permanent resident at Karingal Gardens, 9 Bligh Street Taree. This establishment is part of Bushland Place Health Group, Taree.

After a short spell in Manning Base Hospital, my husband, Jim Lock, was admitted to Karingal Gardens, in respite. After a short time Jim was offered permanent residency, which he gladly accepted, in August 2023.

In September I was fortunate to be offered the room next to him. Jim's room became our bedroom and mine was our day room, separated by our own spacious bathroom.

With the loving care and kindness we received from the staff and the friendship of the other residents, our health improved very quickly. High quality food also contributed to our well being. Our family was delighted in the change of our appearance and happiness.

I was pleased to be offered the position of Resident Representative. I visit my fellow residents both on ground and first floor. We chat about our lives in Karingal Gardens and discuss any extra help that might contribute to the resident's comfort and happiness.  I attend a Consumer Advisory Body Meeting quarterly. The minutes of said meeting is passed on to the Board of Directors.

Sadly, Jim's health started to deteriorate in April 2024. He was admitted to hospital for tests and after two days we received the dreaded news that all that could be offered was Palliative Care.

Then something wonderful was offered to us. Jim was able to come home to Karingal Gardens.

Our doctor, Simon Chivers, came and explained in detail, how Jim's care would be administered. There would be no pain or discomfort. Our family, including Jim's brother and wife from Brisbane, were given unlimited visiting. I was able to sleep in my bed near Jim each night. The end came sooner than expected. Only two nights. After breakfast the next morning, we watched life slip away.

What a beautiful end of life. Well done my loving friends at Karingal Gardens. Be proud of all your achievements.
